Easy to Follow Directions for Installing a Wood Fence

DIY installation for a wood privacy fence.

The first thing you will need are the posts, fence boards, and runner boards. I recommend three runners for a 6 foot high fence. Runners are the 2x4 boards that run horizontal between the fence posts that you will attach the fence post boards to. You can purchase these supplies from Home Depot or Lowe's or a local fence company. We purchased ours at Lowe's.

In order to order the right amount of fence you will need to first measure where you want the fence. Whether it is going to be just a portion of your yard or the whole yard you will want to measure the area you are wanting to put the fence with a tape measure first. TIP* If you are installing a new fence and are not sure about your property lines call your local zoning department first, they will often come out for free and mark your property for you or tell you where to locate the marker stakes if your property has them.

After you have the fencing material you will want to dig the post holes. For this you can use a post hole digger or you can rent an auger machine from Home Depot and Lowe's that will dig the holes without so much muscle.

You will want to dig your corner posts first. Post holes should be at least 12 inches in diameter for 6 inch posts and 2 feet deep if you are using wood posts. If you are using steel posts you can either bang them straight into the ground using a post pounder. We have tried both methods and with our hard clay soil the pounding the post straight into the ground seemed to withstand the winds better.

After you have your corner posts dug, you will want to place a stake in the ground near the hole and tie a string to it. Run the string down to the next corner. This string will act as your guide to make sure you keep your holes and posts in a straight line. Be sure and try to make the string as tight as possible so that the wind does not mess with it.

Next you will need to measure from the center of your corner post to where the next post will need to be. If you are doing 6 foot sections of fence or using fence panels then it will be 6 feet to your next post hole. However if when you measured your length was not dividable by 6 and you had to buy a shorter section of fence for one of the panels you will need to remember that and put a post at that length. Also if you have a gate you are going to be installing you will want to make sure you take that in to account when you measure for your posts so you don't forget to put those posts in.

After you have the post holes dug, you will want to start setting the posts. Put the post in the hole and fill the hole with cement. While the cement is still wet, use a level on your post to make sure the post is flush, or level straight up and down. Also make sure if you are using square posts that they are squared up so they are not at an angle to attach the fence panel to.

For the next fence post, and each fence post to follow, you will want to do these same steps with, but what is even more important is to make sure that you measure between each post as you set it in the cement to make sure that the fence panel or runner boards will fit. Being even an inch off can make it so you can't install a fence panel, however if you are doing runner boards that are not pre-cut you do have some room for play since you will need to cut each runner for each section separately.

You may even need to brace your fence posts with stakes so they don't move while the cement is setting up. And be sure and check it often for levelness and to make sure it hasn't moved.

After the cement is dry, you can attach the post hardware. Depending on the hardware you get you may need a drill or just a screw driver or wrench.

After you have the post hardware installed you can start attaching the fence panels. If you are not using fence panels, you will first need to measure one section between fence posts and then cut the runner boards for that section.

Attach the runner boards. Continue to do this for each section.

After all the runner boards are attached go back and screw in each fence board to the runner boards using wood screws. To get the spacing even between each board, use a scrap piece of wood and move it with you to each board.
